Freelance Nancy Nicolson won this year's Merial 'Open Book' award. She will use the cash prize to study Brazil's beef industry, looking at the scale and production methods used, including breeds, feeding, abattoirs, packing plants. Bill Butterworth’s proposed study earned him the runner-up prize.

The winner of the 2004 Merial Open Book award was Rachael Porter, who went to the US to investigate calf rearing.
