The Yellow Peril makes its mark
A unique cheese commissioned by Whisper.pr, the agency run by Guild members Adrian Bell and Ruth Jewkes, was served to more than 1000 guests at the
Farmers Weekly Awards dinner in London.
Adrian BellThe idea of commissioning a cheese to help celebrate the publication’s 75th anniversary was greeted enthusiastically by fellow Guild members Jane King,
Farmers Weekly editor, and awards organiser Debbie Beaton.
“We wanted to offer something that would commemorate this significant anniversary and also showcase British food and farming at its best,” explains Adrian. “We approached Charles Martell, ‘food hero’ and creator of the only known cheese with a cult following, Stinking Bishop.”
The celebration cheese labelCharles Martell was asked to produce a cheese that, unlike its stable mate, which is famous for dividing opinion, would appeal to all palates. After a few ‘prototypes’ and much tasting, the finished product was a semi-soft cheese made from English milk, rind-washed in Scotch whisky suffused with Welsh saffron.
Choosing a name was easier – everyone agreed that ‘Yellow Peril’, as
Farmers Weekly is sometimes known, could not be more appropriate.
More than 200lb of the limited edition cheese was produced for the Awards night, receiving a universal thumbs-up from guests.
“I’d love Charles to make more ‘Yellow Peril’ because it obviously hit the mark in terms of taste,” says Adrian. “But I think it’s likely to stay a one-off, unfortunately.
