New print and broadcast journalism award

Red Tractor Assurance Public Engagement Award

Open exclusively to Members of the Guild

Deadline: Wednesday, August 24

The British Guild of Agricultural Journalists is delighted to welcome Red Tractor Assurance as the sponsor of a new print and broadcast journalism award that celebrates excellence in the reporting of farmer initiatives to tell the public about food production.

Red Tractor AwardEntries from Members of the Guild for the Red Tractor Assurance Public Engagement Award may describe the way that farmers have opened their farm to the public, created a direct sales channel, used technology to tell their traceability story or gone above and beyond to communicate farming's great stories to consumers.

Judges want to see stories that highlight farmers who realise how important it is for consumers to understand where their food comes from and have taken responsibility for getting the messages across.

A first prize of £1000 plus one runner up prize of £500 is up for grabs and will be presented at the Guild’s Harvest Lunch in London on Friday, September 23.

Red Tractor Award - Philippa WiltshireAnnouncing the new award at the Guild's Livestock Event get-together, Philippa Wiltshire (right), industry and regulatory affairs manager at Red Tractor Assurance, said: “Since the organisation was set up in 2000, Red Tractor has been a crucial part of the farming industry, providing robust food assurance from farm to plate.

“Shoppers rely on the logo to guarantee the standards of food production that they demand, and they buy-in to the British farming story. We want farmers to be proud of what they do, be ambassadors for the industry and engage the public.

“We hope this award will highlight the importance of public engagement and reward Guild members who are helping to tell the story.”

For the first year of this new award, entries may have been published or broadcast at any time since January 1, 2014 and they may be entered by the author or by an editor on behalf of the author. Material produced as part of a promotional or advertorial feature is not eligible.

To enter the BGAJ Red Tractor Assurance Public Engagement Award, send a high resolution PDF of an article published in print, a link to an article published online or the script of a broadcast to Ben Pike (ben@benpikecommunications.co.uk), with a note of where and when the piece was published or broadcast.

The deadline for entries is Wednesday, August 24.
