IFAJ World Congress 2014

Following a very successful period as the Guild's general secretary, Clemmie Gleeson has decided to stand down from the role.

The Guild's management council has started the process of recruiting a replacement, who will also take on the temporary role of secretary to the IFAJ World Congress 2014.

This paid position presents a great opportunity for an enthusiastic supporter of the Guild and its objectives to make a lasting contribution.

Full details are as follows:

The Council of The British Guild of Agricultural Journalists seeks to appoint a General Secretary with immediate effect and to extend the role to include the secretarial responsibilities for the 2014 International Federation of Agricultural Journalists (IFAJ) World Congress.

This will be held in Scotland in September 2014, with a pre-Congress tour in England and a post-Congress tour in Wales and Western England. Duties for the IFAJ World Congress role will commence in July 2012.

 

BGAJ Secretarial role

The General Secretary will provide administrative support to the Council under a Service Agreement for a fixed fee of £6,000 per annum plus expenses. It is anticipated that the Service Agreement will require three days per month and will involve attending all BGAJ Council meetings (currently four per annum) and national BGAJ events (currently AGM and Harvest Festival service/lunch).

Alongside normal administrative duties the General Secretary will be the first point of contact for the British Guild and will be expected to promote the Guild’s aims and objectives.

 

IFAJ World Congress 2014 Secretarial role

In addition, the British Guild of Agricultural Journalists will host the 2014 World Congress of the International Federation of Agricultural Journalists (IFAJ), which is expected to attract around 200 farm and rural journalists. The Council of the Guild of Agricultural Journalists seeks to appoint a General Secretary for the IFAJ World Congress 2014. Starting in September 2012, the General Secretary will work alongside the Congress committee and Treasurer, as well as a dedicated travel agent and event organiser to provide administrative support to the Council under a Service Agreement for:

  • July-December 2012 - One day/month for at a fixed fee of £1,000
  • Jan 2013 to December 2013 at a fixed annual fee of £6,000 plus expenses (3 days/month)
  • January 2014 to August 2014 inclusive at a fixed pro rata rate of £4,000 plus expenses (3 days/month)
  • 1-11 September 2014 - pre-Congress tour, main congress and post-congress tour - an additional fixed fee of £1,500 + expenses will also be paid. The secretary will be expected to attend the whole of the main Congress 4-7 September but not the pre- and post-Congress tours

Congress dates

The 2014 IFAJ Congress will be held in Scotland from 4-7 September 2014. The pre-Congress tour will run from 1-3 September 2014 in England and a post-Congress tour with be held in Wales and the west of England from 8-10 September 2014.

Duties for IFAJ 2014

Alongside normal administrative duties, the General Secretary will be the first point of contact for the IFAJ World Congress 2014 (excluding delegate bookings and event management which will be outsourced to a third party company), and will be expected to promote the aims and objectives of the Congress.

The successful candidate will also be required to manage the day-to-day financial administration of the Congress, including maintaining aggregate information on income and expenditure via an Excel spreadsheet.

 

Qualifications

Candidates need not be a member of the BGAJ, but must have an understanding of the organisation and its role in the industry and are encouraged to join as a member or friend of the BGAJ.
