Guild member Nancy Nicolson won first place in the online television category of the IFAJ Star Prize Broadcasting award ahead of entries from agricultural journalist Guilds and press clubs around the World.

Her video item on crofting was published on Farmers Weekly‘s Fwi.co.uk website and explored the precarious economics of this traditional farming life, which some people see as a model for 21st Century sustainable agriculture.

The judges said Nancy’s winning online video entry was a very strong report: “It was informative, sharp, coherently structured, well-written and presented,” they commented. “It held the viewer’s attention from start to finish.”

In congratulating the winners, award co-ordinator Liz Harfull, an Australian freelance journalist, noted a significant improvement in the number and quality of online entries submitted this year.

”It shows that agricultural journalists are starting to make more use of internet-based broadcast options,” she says. ”Interestingly, journalists who had once worked in a single discipline, are broadening their skills to work on-line, and present stories in packages that combine audio, video, text and photos, as well as links to other web-based material.

She adds: ”I hope Guild members will keep supporting the IFAJ Star Prize Broadcasting award, which is only in its second year.”
