2018 IFAJ Young Leaders Award open for entries

The International Federation of Agricultural Journalists (IFAJ) has opened the application process for the 2018 IFAJ/Alltech Young Leaders Award.

The accolade recognises outstanding young journalists who demonstrate potential to become leaders in the agricultural journalism industry.

Each of IFAJ’s 43 member guilds – including the British Guild of Agricultural Journalists – may submit one nominee for the prestigious award.

Applications from BGAJ Members should be made via BGAJ IFAJ representative Jane Craigie, who can be contacted at jane@janecraigie.com.

Ten young journalists — age 35 or younger on 31 December 2017 — will be selected by an international jury for the prize.

The award includes a €1000 stipend to attend the IFAJ Congress in the Netherlands in July 2018.

The Young Leaders also participate in a Boot Camp in the days prior to the IFAJ Congress, which includes professional development and networking workshops and farm visits in the Wageningen area.

“At Alltech, we believe in supporting and nurturing young minds,” says Pearse Lyons, president and founder of Alltech.

“Each year we partner with the IFAJ as they search the world for the future leaders of agri-journalism.

“We encourage young journalists who are passionate about communicating and connecting the agri-industry to a global audience to apply for the 2018 program.”

The British Guild has had muich success in nominmating successful Young Leader candidates, with a British Member gaining a place eight times in 1o years.

They include former Farmers Weekly journalist Caroline Stocks, who is now a successful freelancer and BGAJ Council Member.

IFAJ secretary general Steve Werblow says: “Throughout the world, alumni of the Young Leaders program have become indispensable to their guilds, and several now serve on IFAJ’s Executive committee.”

Individual applications must be completed by 12 January 2018.

Those applications will be forwarded to each applicant’s guild. Each guild will then select its nominee and submit his or her application by 9 February 2018.

Applications must include three samples of work.

Nominees must be willing to attend Congress and Boot Camp. Boot Camp will be conducted in English. For full details visit the IFAJ website at ifaj.org.
