Guild Member Aly Balsom has left her post as Farmers Weekly’s deputy livestock editor to set up her own business as a freelance writer.
“I’ve had four great years on the livestock desk at Farmers Weekly, but I’ve decided to move back to the countryside and set myself a new challenge as a freelance journalist,” says Aly.
Based in Bradford on Avon in Wiltshire, Aly says she remains strongly committed to the industry and will continue to write on all aspects of agriculture.
“I’m available to cover varying topics from technical livestock production to business management, farming news and food and rural living,” she says. “I’ll also work in public relations within the agricultural industry.”
Aly joined Farmers Weekly in 2009 after working in the technical team for independent dairy specialists, Kingshay. Prior to this she spent nine months working on a 900-cow dairy unit on the Canterbury Plains in New Zealand after graduating from Newcastle University with a 2:1 BSc (Hons) in Zoology.
Starting as a livestock reporter at Farmers Weekly, she progressed to deputy livestock editor within 18 months.
“During my four years there I’ve been lucky enough to work in a fantastic team and gain a wide range of multimedia skills,” says Aly.
This has included editing and re-launching Dairy Update magazine, writing technical, news and feature articles, managing projects, blogging, using social media and video work. More recently she headed up the ‘Making Sense of Medicines’ campaign.
“This was a six week campaign aimed at promoting responsible use of medicines in livestock – a hugely important topic and one which is being discussed at EU and UK level,” Aly explains.
