Caroline Stocks is a national award winner!

Published on 30th March 2016

Caroline StocksFreelance journalist Caroline Stocks, a Member of the Guild, was the delighted category winner in a national competition recognising excellent women working in the British media.

Caroline won the Business Writer of the Year award in the inaugural Words By Women Awards, set up in response to the consistently low numbers of women nominated for the Society of Editors’ Press Awards.

She beat off stiff competition in her category from journalists from the Financial Times, the Sunday Times, Business Insider and Estates Gazette, winning the title for two articles published in Farmers Weekly.

Caroline was one of 15 national media journalists recognised at the awards, which were judged by leading female editors and presented by Kay Burley of Sky News at the Groucho Club in London.

Other winners included Helen Pidd of the Guardian, Louisa Loveluck of the Telegraph, BuzzFeed’s Rossalyn Warren and Sky News reporter Sophie Ridge.

Caroline, who received the award for two articles – one on robotic dairying and another on Danish pig production (click on the images to read PDFs) – said she was hugely surprised to win the award.

“I was shortlisted alongside some fantastic journalists, so I never expected to win,” she said. “To be a specialist, business-to-business journalist and yet be recognised alongside mainstream national reporters is a huge honour.”

Caroline said it was great to be part of a competition that recognised the excellent work being done by women in journalism.

“We have some incredible women working in the British media – none more so than the ones working in agricultural journalism,” she said. “Hopefully my win will encourage other Guild members to enter these and the Press Association Awards next year so we can continue to showcase the talent in agricultural journalism.”
