Guild's former chaplain David Meara retires

Published on 19th August 2014

David MearaThe Venerable David Meara, Rector of St Bride's Church and Archdeacon of London, who presided over the Guild's annual Harvest Service for many years, has retired.

David has celebrated 40 years as a priest in the Church of England, has been Rector of St Bride's for 14 years, and Archdeacon of London for five years.

"I have greatly enjoyed my ministry at St Bride's, during which the church has maintained and grown its links with the newspaper and wider media industry," he says. "We have expanded our involvement with the City and Livery Companies, grown our volunteer base, and conserved and improved the fabric of St Bride's, with the first phase of an ambitious £2.5 million restoration project successfully completed."

A packed church bade farewell to David and his wife Rosemary, who are moving to Kidlington, Oxfordshire. His successor is the Reverend Canon Dr Alison Joyce.

In light of David's announcement last year of his intention to retire, Guild members at the annual meeting in March 2014 elected St Bride's associate priest Dr George Pitcher to the role of honorary chaplain.
