Helen Brothwell leading Midlands initiatives

Published on 29th July 2013

The new chairman of the Guild’s Midland region aims to maintain and build on the diverse programme of activities and professional training opportunities established for fellow Members of the Guild.

Helen Brothwell (left in picture), Knowledge Transfer Communications Manager at BPEX (British Pig Executive), was elected at the Midlands annual meeting to succeed PR specialist Julie Mate (right below), who has completed three years in the role.

Helen Brothwell + Julie Mate“It’s great to accept the role of helping continue the work of the Guild in the Midlands,” says Helen. “I’m looking forward to building on what Julie and Midlands secretary Liz Snaith have achieved in running a varied programme, including helping to expand the range of popular CPD workshops.

“The Midlands has a fantastic group of enthusiastic members and I hope we can welcome more and more to Guild events,” she adds. “It’s been really good to meet new people at recent meetings and I’m keen to hear members’ ideas on different topics and formats they’d like to see for future get-togethers, perhaps even including online CPD via webinars.”

The Midlands branch has run photography, online video and social media workshops, and is staging a one-day feature writing event in September; these are open to all Members and Friends of the Guild, not just those in the Midlands.

Visits to the BBC rural affairs unit and presentations by Environment Agency and national farming magazine editors, and an agricultural media careers briefing at Harper Adams University College have also been on the events programme – use the links to see reports on these events.

The Midlands committee elected for the ensuring year comprises freelance John Allan; RABI press officer Nick Bond; PR and marketing specialists Mike Bunney, Clive Marlow and Paul Lay; and Tim Price and Will Howell of NFU Mutual.

Stepping down from the chairman's role, Julie Mate commented: “All Guild members should appreciate and be proud of the small, committed team we have in the Midlands, putting on CPD events that meet members' expectations and requirements, while enjoying the camaraderie of fellow members.”
