The British Guild’s membership secretary, PR specialist Liz Snaith, had a surprise encounter with a farming writer at Speakers’ Corner in Hyde Park, London mid-August.

Rodney Magowan, Ulster agricultural journalist and former chairman of the Northern Ireland Guild of Agricultural Journalists, was in the city for a fortnight, having temporarily taken on a new role at the London 2012 Olympics as a Games Maker volunteer.

As part of the Command, Control and Communications team, he had to ‘endure’ an enviable posting on Horse Guards Parade, where the beach volley ball events were held. He met Liz during an off-duty moment – did the distractions of the womens’ competition become just too much?

“I especially enjoyed the unique atmosphere in London as the rejuvenated city played host to the Olympics for the first time since 1948,” says Rodney. “I was impressed by the warm welcome given to visitors from around the world by Londoners.”

Sadly, he offers no comment on the joys of beach volleyball!
