Christine Pedersen, who recently signed up as a Friend of the Guild, is senior dairy business management consultant with The Dairy Group Ltd, a privately owned dairy consultancy based in Taunton, Somerset, operating throughout the UK and overseas.

“I grew up on a mixed family farm in Northamptonshire and was hooked on farming from an early age,” says Christine. “I left home for the University of Nottingham in Autumn 1992 to study animal science with European studies at Sutton Bonnington campus, and after graduating in 1996 I joined ADAS in Salisbury as a trainee dairy consultant.”

Almost 20 years later, her main role at The Dairy Group is to deliver farm-specific advice to help clients in south and south-west England improve dairy herd and business management performance.

“I am also editor and regular contributor to the company’s bi-monthly client newsletter – hence my interest in the Guild,” says Christine, “and I occasionally write articles for other publications published both here and overseas.”

Aside from The Dairy Group, her ‘other’ job is to be Mum to two young children, which does not leave much spare time: “But I’m always keen to try cooking up a storm in the kitchen or to learn some news skills – growing vegetables, sewing and knitting spring to mind, none of which have produced particularly noteworthy results to date!,” Christine says.

“My husband and I enjoy travelling; he is from Denmark and we try to visit our Danish farming family at least a couple of times per year, although I must confess that I have found Danish a difficult language to learn,” she adds. “I am also an advisory member for a local Young Farmers Club and am a member of the local primary school parent’s forum. Very occasionally I still help out on the family farm, which has relocated to the West Country.”
