A student of the Guild’s 2011 new entrant training scheme, Rhian Price, has joined the Guild following her appointment as a reporter on Poultry World, the specialist publication in the Farmers Weekly Group.

“Despite being brought up on a farm, getting to grips with the poultry industry has been a steep learning curve because it’s something I know nothing about – at home, we had dairy cattle, then beef and sheep,” says Rhian. “But I’ve been surprised to learn what a dynamic and exciting industry it is and I’ve been extremely grateful for all the help I’ve received from my editor and producers.”

Working alongside fellow Guild member and Poultry Worldeditor Philip Clarke, her role involves producing content for the magazine and the FWi website, writing technical features, news and the occasional quirky story for the Feathered Forager blog.

“Each day is different and I get to travel and meet lots of interesting people, which is the best bit about the job,” says Rhian. “My highlight so far has been reporting for Farmers Weekly from the Royal Welsh Show; I’m probably a bit biased, because I’m Welsh, but in my opinion it is the best show in the agricultural calendar and I’m already looking forward to going again this year!”

Rhian’s appointment at Poultry World is her first job in journalism after graduating from Cardiff School of Journalism with a PG Diploma in Newspaper Journalism.

“When I’m not working, you will most probably find me on the hockey pitch or reading – it’s addictive and once I start, I can’t stop,” she says. “I also love to go back home and help out on the family farm when I can.”
