New member: Richard Crowhurst

Published on 29th May 2012

Richard CrowhurstRichard Crowhurst still feels nervous when people call him a journalist, preferring to describe himself as a writer, something which possibly comes from the fact he never expected to find himself writing professionally.

The new freelance Guild member, who predominantly covers vegetable crop agronomy and crop protection for the trade press, is from a farming background in Kent, where he studied horticulture at Wye College before starting a career as an agronomist.

“At first I dealt with soft fruit and vegetable crops, then potatoes,” he recalls. “But after the stress got too much I took the plunge and became a freelance writer some seven years ago – and never looked back.

“My agronomic experience is sometimes helpful in some of the subjects I cover but I also report on anything from machinery reviews to packhouse visits, and renewables and bioenergy through my own company, Enagri.

Richard adds: “I love the diversity that being a freelancer brings; one day I’ll be copywriting for a biomass boiler company, and the next reporting from an Allium conference. I’d never quite got around to joining the Guild, so I was delighted to be asked.”
