Many congratulations to Guild member, freelance photographer John Eveson, for carrying off the top prize in the IFAJ’s DeLaval-sponsored Star Prize for Agricultural Photography for the second time.
His all-action image of a young sheepdog trying to impose its will against a flighty ewe was captured at a sale at Skipton Mart in January 2009.
“Some of the dogs are young and inexperienced so you tend to get a few close encounters between dog and sheep,” says John. “I took a series of this dog as it came towards me.”
The winning image
John was also awarded a Highly Commended certificate as runner-up in the Nature/Landscape category for an atmospheric picture of a storm cloud with a rainbow coming from the centre.
“I’d spotted the cloud while driving on the motorway in Scotland – it looked like a huge UFO as it formed in an otherwise clear sky,” John recalls. “I left the motorway as soon as I could and got to a suitable place to take the picture, which happened to be Wetherall in north Cumbria.”
UFO or storm cloud?
John wins 250 euros for his sheepdog image, judged the best among a vast entry of high quality pictures published by members of agricultural journalism Guilds, club and similar organisations affiliated to the IFAJ around the World.
