Entries close for 2019 international Star Prize awards

British Guild members are being encouraged to enter a range of IFAJ Star Prize awards – the deadline for all of which is 23 February.

The British Guild has a strong track record in the awards, which are organised by the International Federation of Agricultural Journalists.

The Star Prize for Excellence in Print (sponsored by John Deere)

This recognises the best agricultural writing among journalists in IFAJ member countries. The feature must have been published between 1 January 2018 – 31 December 2018.

This is not an individual contest: the British Guild can only enter one article for judging. If you would like a piece of your work considered for entry, please email jane@janecraigie.com.

Cash prize: €500 and a trophy, runner-up €250.

Star Prize Award for Broadcast (video and audio)

The Guild can submit one entry from Members broadcasting on radio, television or online in each of the Star Prize award categories:

  • Audio – produced primarily for broadcast on radio or as a podcast published between 1 January 2018 – 31 December 2018.

  • Video – produced primarily for broadcast on television or as an online video published between 1 January 2018 – 31 December 2018.

Cash prize for both categories: €500 and a trophy, runner-up €250.

Star Prize for Photography (open to individuals)

Open to all BGAJ members who can enter as individuals. The criteria is one published photo per category. Categories are: People, Production and Nature and landscape.

The photograph must have been published between 1 January 2018 – 31 December 2018.

Cash prize per category of €250 + a certificate. Overall Star prize winner Cash prize: €500 and a trophy.

The Star Prize for Broadcast-Digital Media sponsored by Rabobank (open to individuals)

This award recognises outstanding online, cross-platform communications journalism utilising at least three of the following: text, images, audio, video.

Using a combination of multimedia platforms to tell a story can capture the true spirit of online journalism. Judges will look for pieces that use a range of contemporary multimedia tools.

Cash prize: €500 and a trophy, runner-up €250.

The IFAJ/Caterpillar AgTech Reporting Award (open to individuals)

The IFAJ/Caterpillar AgTech Reporting Award recognises world-class reporting on the growing ‘agtech’ industry – the application of new technology in agriculture.

Generously sponsored by Caterpillar, entries to this new contest will be articles that convey the fast-developing nature of this sector and which best communicate its relevance and importance to key audiences such as farmers, investors, or consumers.

Entries may be print, video, audio or multimedia/online published between 1 January 2018 – 31 December 2018.

Submissions entered for any of the Star Prize categories are not eligible to enter this award.

Cash prize: €1,000.

IFAJ/Caterpillar Development Bursary (dates TBC)

With the Caterpillar Development Bursary Fund, IFAJ encourages members to pursue the extraordinary in search of personal professional development and wider IFAJ progress.

This bursary encourages winners to step outside their ‘comfort zone’, ideally through travel.

Entrants are asked to set out a compelling case explaining what they should be one of the first Caterpillar Development Scholars.
