A new monthly supplement dedicated to agricultural news and rural affairs has been launched by publisher DC Thomson for two Scottish newspaper titles.

The Courier, based in Dundee, and the Press & Journal located at Aberdeen, are publishing the Farming supplement as a joint venture.

The two titles already run regular coverage of farming topics, rural affairs and market prices and this continues unabated despite the launch of the multi-page supplement. For agriculture editors Ewan Pate (The Courier) and Joe Watson (Press & Journal) it means a significant increase in their workload.

Circulation remains within the traditional readership area of the two newspapers – from the Highlands and Islands south into Perth & Kinross and Fife – and although some content is shared the publication carries individual branding of the two titles.

Rival regional newspaper publisher Newsquest Media Group continues to expand its regional farming coverage, which is modelled on The Scottish Farmer.

It now has four titles: The Northern FarmerThe Southern Farmer, Three Counties Farmer and The Wales Farmer, all compiled and produced by local newspaper staff.
