After 17 years in various roles on Farmers Weekly, Guild member Philip Clarke has been appointed editor of the FW Group publication Poultry World.
He replaces Richard Allison who became Farmers Weekly arable editor, and editor of Crops magazine, at the end of last year – see News.
Philip started with Farmers Weekly as Business editor, then worked in Brussels as Europe editor for a spell, before returning to FW Group headquarters in Sutton, Surrey to work across the News and Business desks as the magazine’s Economics and World editor.
He says the move to Poultry World comes at an opportune time and will give him a fresh challenge: “I felt I’d been in my current role for long enough and with another CAP reform on the horizon – my fourth including, the 1992 MacSharry reforms – I decided it was time to move on!”
“Editing Poultry World will put me in charge of developing what is already a strong product in print and online,” he adds. “It will also give me the people and magazine management opportunities I’ve yearned for.”
The opportunity to learn about a new sector – one characterised by a number of very dynamic individuals and businesses – is also part of the appeal.
“I’m greatly looking forward to learning more about the sector and the people and businesses involved,” says Philip. “The magazine is already well liked and respected within the industry and the old adage “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” is one that I’ll adhere too.
“However, given my background in business reporting, I am keen to enhance the business content within the title and also to introduce more international aspects. There is also a lot to do with the online offering, including making it more interactive.
“I’m relishing the opportunity to edit my first magazine, while continuing with my Business Blog on FWi as well,” says Philip.
Fellow Guild member Jane King, Farmers Weekly editor, says: “This promotion to his first editorship is much deserved. Phil has made a huge contribution to the changes within the Farmers Weekly Group over the past five years and I know his experience will prove invaluable in building on the great work undertaken by Richard Allison.
Poultry World is part of the Farmers Weekly Group and has a circulation of more than 3500.
