GAJ eAlert - July 2011

Netherthorpe Award – deadline July 29 The deadline for Guild Netherthorpe ‘Communicator of the Year’ is fast approaching. The judges are ready and waiting to thumb through a sheaf of nominations for Guild members who have made a sustained contribution to agricultural communications. Nominations can be for journalists using the written or broadcast word, a columnist or someone involved in commercial communications who deserves their name on the 'crowing cockerel' trophy. For full details, see the Netherthorpe Award page of the website, where a form can be downloaded.

Guild at the Dairy Event & Livestock Show.... In her role as media officer at the Dairy Event & Livestock Show, Guild member Liz Snaith is organising the Guild’s reception on the first evening (Tuesday, September 6) in the press rooms. The reception has again attracted generous sponsorship from NFU Mutual.

....at the Cereals Event…. A record turnout of close to 60 members and Friends of the Guild enjoyed another sociable get-together at the Cereals Event in June. A report and pictures has been posted in the Events section of the Guild website.

….and at the Royal Highland Show The Guild of Agricultural Journalists in Scotland hosted a reception at the Royal Highland Show that was exceptionally well attended by members and invited industry guests. They enjoyed a lavish buffet sponsored by the Vion Food Group and also supported by Mackies of Scotland, First Milk, Quality Meat Scotland (QMS) and Aberdeen-Angus Cattle Society. A good time was had by all, it seems!

Joe on the mend Having suffered a nasty car accident and spent two weeks on his back in a hospital bed, Guild member Joe Watson, farming editor on the Press & journal, is back home. He still faces a lengthy period of recovery and convalescence, however, so will no doubt welcome the occasional cheery greeting from friends and colleagues.

Young farmer search Jamie Foster of BBC Entertainment has been in touch to ask members of the Guild to urge any eligible young farmers they know to enter the next BBC Three ‘Young Talent of the Year’ show.   “This series celebrates the millions of young British workers whose skills won’t win them a million pound recording contract, but deserve recognition nonetheless!,” he says. “Following the success of the past two years, we’re now on a nationwide hunt for young and talented farmers, aged between 16 to 25 years, who can be true ambassadors for their trade and who are up for a challenge and want to showcase their skills to the world.”   Applicants will be whittled down to four contestants who will be put through tough and testing challenges based on their skills – one will eventually win the BBC Three’s Young Farmer of the Year title.

Video for the web Guild members (young and not so young) terrorised members and staff at The Farmers Club during a very productive ‘video for the web’ training session – then suffered the same fate when the cameras recorded their thoughts on the session. Read the report and watch the video in News on the Guild website.

New members The Guild is delighted to welcome the following new members. Members who would like to invite colleagues and industry contacts to consider joining can contact membership secretary Liz Snaith.
