Obituary: Tim Angelbeck

Published on 4th January 2018

News has just reached the Guild of the death in February 2017 of Tim Angelbeck, a former freelance journalist and Chairman of the Guild, at the age of 93.

His is pictured courtesy of Worcester News with his late wife Nancie when celebrating their 60th wedding anniversary in 2008.

Tim came to regular journalism relatively late in life, having spent the most part of his career as an agricultural advisor.

After studying at St John’s College, Cambridge, he worked as a researcher at Cambridge University before getting a job in the Government’s National Agricultural Advisory Service (NAAS, later ADAS). In 1961, was posted to Worcestershire where he and his wife Nancy and their two children set up home in Drakes Broughton, and remained there for the rest of their lives.

Tim formed the Worcestershire Grassland Society in 1963, which is credited with improving grass quality and yields in the county, and he continued in his advisory role until retiring in 1984.

However, he had already begun contributing articles on agriculture to Berrow’s Worcester Journal – the worlds’ oldest newspaper title in continuous publication – and he became a regular columnist while also contributing to the Worcester Evening News until 2004.

Tim Angelbeck was Chairman of the Guild 2001-2003, as fellow member Tim Price recalls: “I remember him as a hugely knowledgeable figure who was a great help to me when I first met him at the start of my career in agricultural journalism in the 1980s.

“Quietly spoken, sincere and courteous, he always had a considered view on Guild issues, which helped keep Council on a steady path during his time as Chairman.”
