Elections to the Guild’s management council are approaching – but the Guild is also set to host one of the first salvos fired in the battle for the rural vote in the General election.
A new event on Thursday, March 18 will combine the formalities of the Midlands and National annual meetings with a Midlands-organised media conference to which the national political party spokesmen on farming and rural affairs have been invited.
“We’ve already had confirmation from Conservative spokesman Jim Paice that he is coming and we’ve a strong indication that the Liberal Democrat spokesman will attend,” says Midlands secretary, Liz Snaith. “We’re also arranging for a skilled chairman to handle what I’m sure will be a lively discussion and debate on the future of farming, a sustainable environment and food security, together with other rural issues that will come to the fore in this year’s General Election.”
The new event is being hosted by agricultural equipment firm AGCO, which also sponsors the Guild’s eAlerts, at the Motor Heritage Centre, Gaydon in Warwickshire.
In addition to being treated to lunch, members will have free entry to the displays of historic British-built cars and competition vehicles that make up the Gaydon centre’s peerless collection.
