Alison Mann, news reporter on The Scottish Farmer, has joined the Guild.

A 2009 journalism graduate from Glasgow Caledonian University, Alison’s first job was working for an agency that mainly filed to the Scottish tabloids. From there she worked at local papers and has been with The Scottish Farmerfor almost a year, an experience she says she is relishing.

“I don’t have a farming background but my partner is a farmer’s son so his family helped keep me right when I first started,” says Alison, who grew up just outside Glasgow. “I work in the news department and am enjoying the variety of stories I’m covering.

“Getting to cover shows has been an experience, especially the Royal Highland Show, and I’ve had to learn about the different breeds pretty quickly,” she adds. “Whatever I’m doing, everyone is really friendly and helpful and this makes it a great industry to work in.”

In her spare time Alison says she enjoys hill walking, rock climbing and running. When the walking boots are not laced up, she likes to bake, knit and sew quilts and dresses.

And as if that isn’t enough to keep her busy, she is also studying for a degree in international studies through the Open University.
