Living on the coast near Woodbridge in East Suffolk surrounded by thousands of acres of vegetable crops, it was almost inevitable that new Guild member Richard Shepherd-Barron should write about them.

He has been doing so for some years now, mainly for titles such as Vegetable Farmer, Fruit Grower and Commercial Greenhouse Grower, the magazines from ACT Publishing run by fellow Guild member John Jarrett, as well as South East Farmer.

“I was brought up in a farming environment in East Norfolk and have worked as an assistant farm manager,” says Richard. “I also did two years National Service with 1st Royal Dragoons in Germany and then spent five years involved in motor racing.”

Driving  sports, touring, GT and small formula racing cars took him to races in the UK, Belgium, Germany, Italy and France – including the World famous Le Mans 24 hours race. He subsequently worked in the motor industry for Alfa Romeo in Milan and London, then international road haulage (mainly Italy but also to the Middle East), engineering and refrigerated commercial vehicle building.

“I’ve been writing about agricultural and horticultural matters for years,” he adds, “but also about logistics technicalities, business-to-business subjects and motor sport.”

Today, in addition to these topics Richard carries out PR and promotional activities for the Morgan Motor Company based in Malvern, Worcestershire and a French manufacturer of portable insulated containers for the food industry.

Among his interests, Richard inevitably lists motor sport but also cycling, gardening and travel. He is pictured below at the wheel of a Morgan three-wheeler sportscar at the Goodwood Festival of Speed
