Marcello Garbagnoli has won a coveted award from the International Federation of Agricultural Journalists (IFAJ).

The photo of a newborn Saler calf, taken while photographing Angus Gowthorpe’s beef and arable farm near York, won first place in the production category of the IFAJ Star Prize award and runner-up overall.

Marcello, who has worked at Farmers Guardian for 15 years, spotted the picture opportunity while photographing the farm for a feature on the farm’s grassland and soil management.

“As we were walking around the farm I noticed the small calf looking at me from under the protection of its mother,” said Marcello, who has won various IFAJ and BGAJ accolades for his work over the years.

“It was a lucky shot as the light was perfect the moment I took the picture.”

In their remarks, the judges said: “Amazing composition, wonderful balance of light, super connection with subject.”
