The Farmers Weekly arable desk and specialist arable publication Crops have a new editor following Guild member Richard Allison’s move from another Reed Business Publishing post.

“I spent the past four years as Poultry World editor, working in a sector I knew very little about at first,” says Richard. “But I soon learned and successfully oversaw many changes on the publication, including a new design, new content and a strengthening of the magazine’s online presence.”

Richard’s farming roots are in the dairy sector and he initially made a career in dairy research having studied for a degree in agriculture at the University of Nottingham. He then moved to the ADAS consultancy before entering the world of journalism in 2001 by joining Farmers Weekly as a livestock reporter in the middle of the foot-and-mouth crisis.

“One reason for wanting to move back to Farmers Weekly is that I missed the weekly routine and wanted to have a greater input into FW and its online presence FWi,” he says. “On top of that, I wanted a new challenge – which I’ll certainly have by moving into another sector and taking on not only the arable desk but also Crops.”
