Ruth McLean, who has become a Member of the Guild, has worked with NFU Scotland as Communication Manager and Editor of Scottish Farming Leader, the organisation’s monthly magazine, for the past two-and-a-half years following eight years as a regional and local journalist in the west of Scotland.

She works alongside Bob Carruth, Communications Director and fellow Member of the Guild.

“In my previous role I took an active interest in compiling the newspaper’s weekly farming pages, as well as specialist features,” says Ruth. “I’ve always taken an active interest in agriculture – I was a committee member at the Campbeltown Young Farmers Club – and I’m always keen to grow my knowledge.

“I like nothing more than to speak to someone to find out their story, where they are from and how they got to where they are now, and I really enjoy working within this sector as every day is different and varied,” she adds. “Being able to help NFUS members and lobby for them as part of a well-respected organisation is a part of the job I enjoy.”

Away from the office, Ruth is a fitness enthusiast, taking on new challenges having previously cycled from London to Paris and London to Brussels to raise money for charity.

“I also have a guilty pleasure for gin, particularly those with local provenance,” she admits. “And I love browsing the local markets in Edinburgh for something a bit different.”
