Uncertainty and challenges facing the UK agricultural industry mean BGAJ members are playing a vital role providing reliable, balanced, and valuable information to farmers.

Speaking at the Guild’s AGM in Stamford in Lincolnshire (27 March), BGAJ chairman Ben Pike said now more than ever the agricultural industry needs accurate information, new perspective and expert insights.

And while the Guild and its members might not have the power to influence domestic and global politics, Ben said he was hugely positive about the role BGAJ members and the Guild can play in supporting the sector.

“As a Guild, we are in a strong position,” Ben said in his AGM address. “Membership numbers are healthy, and our financial standing is solid. I’m very grateful to our sponsors and directors for helping to steer the ship in the right direction as the industry evolves.”

Supporting professional development remains a priority for the Guild, with a commitment to upskilling members through regular training courses, he said.

“Over the past year, we’ve offered a photography course and a video production course, with an editing course to follow. We’re also exploring training in areas like AI and digital marketing, and we’ll share more details soon. If you have ideas for future training, please let us know.”

In a significant announcement for the British Guild and its members, Ben said the International Federation of Agricultural Journalists (IFAJ) had approved the UK’s application to host the IFAJ Congress in 2029.

“We’re now in the early stages of planning, but if we can make it happen, we’ll be going full throttle to ensure the UK puts on an outstanding event, showcasing the best of British agriculture.”

He also encouraged members to take advantage of networking opportunities at key industry events, including UK Dairy Day, Groundswell, Cereals, and LAMMA, as well as the Guild’s annual Harvest Lunch, kindly sponsored by NFU Mutual.

At this year’s event on 9 October, for the first time, an official venue has been secured for an ‘afterparty’ near Stationers’ Hall in London, providing a dedicated space for members to connect. Tickets are available to purchase now.

Looking ahead, Ben said the Guild plans to reinvigorate its Midlands branch, with Guild member Liz Snaith leading the initiative.

An online store offering branded merchandise, including clothing, mugs, flasks, and hats, produced at cost for members, will also be launched soon.

“We’re also refreshing our awards portfolio to streamline the entry process and enhance the experience for both entrants and sponsors,” Ben added. “A new awards portal is in development to improve visibility and accessibility.”
