
Omnia Digital Farming Award celebrates precision farming reporting excellence
The Omnia Digital Farming Award, presented at the British Guild of Agricultural Journalists’ Harvest Lunch, recognises outstanding reporting on precision farming technology. Sponsored by crop protection specialists Hutchinsons Omnia Precision Agronomy Services, the award is open to any Guild member who has published a feature on the use of precision farming technologies in either arable or livestock agriculture.
As precision farming technology continues to transform the agricultural landscape, the need for insightful and clear journalism has become increasingly important. This award highlights the role of journalists in explaining the intricacies and potential of these technologies to a broad audience of farmers and stakeholders.

Melanie Jenkins was highly commended for her article, Smart tech: Connecting the dots, published in Crop Production Magazine in June 2024. Her piece explores how digital connectivity in agricultural machinery can be utilised, and reviews the various platforms available to help farmers and operators streamline their operations. The judges praised her article for its comprehensive approach and for offering valuable insights into the technology available to today’s farmers.

The top honour went to Mike Abram for his article, Why ChatGPT technology will change arable farming, which appeared in Farmers Weekly on 30 August 2024. Abram’s article dives into the transformative potential of generative AI, focusing on how this technology is poised to revolutionise arable farming. He investigates both the current capabilities of generative AI and the challenges preventing its wider adoption, while showcasing a farmer who is already benefiting from its implementation. The judges commended the piece for its informative and forward-thinking analysis of this increasingly important topic.
