The most poignant part of the Harvest Lunch was when the Guild presented its 2026 Netherthorpe Communicator of the Year Award posthumously to Mike Green, in recognition of a career in agricultural journalism spanning more than four decades.
Mike began his career in 1979 with the West of Scotland Agricultural College advisory service, working with dairy farmers in Ayrshire and Lanarkshire, before moving into journalism in 1987.
He worked as livestock and business reporter for Farmers Weekly, then joined Farmers Guardian as chief reporter in 1991, becoming news editor three years later. In 2005, he took on the editorship of British Dairying, a title he edited for almost 17 years, drawing on his own upbringing on a small dairy farm in West Yorkshire. He continued writing as a freelance journalist and remained a Guild member until his death earlier this year.
Colleagues remembered Mike as curious, approachable and generous with his time, with a particular gift for building trust and helping others find their voice in the farming press. The award was accepted by his wife, Kate, and family friend and BGAJ member Gary Crossley, who shared moving tributes from colleagues, including Olivia Cooper, Jane Craigie and Cedric Porter.
