A new Member of the Guild, Melanie Jenkins, has entered rural journalism by joining Agri-hub, the Devon-based agricultural media service.
Melanie is a full-time editorial and PR assistant to the freelancers who form the Agri-hub team, led by Olivia Cooper, also a Member of the Guild. One of her first actions after being appointed was to enrol on the Guild’s John Deere-sponsored ‘new entrants’ training award scheme to help get to grips with her new role.
“It’s been my ambition to become an agricultural journalist for several years,” says Melanie. “I’ve been looking forward to working with Olivia to help expand Agri-hub and develop relations with editors and clients alike.”
The farmer’s daughter from Monmouthshire has a degree in English Literature from Reading University, where she introduced an agricultural column to the university newspaper.
“Despite having a large selection of agricultural courses, the paper was surprisingly lacking in agricultural content,” says Melanie.
Her appetite for agricultural journalism was whetted by a week’s work experience with Farmers Weekly last year and by helpng report from the Royal Welsh Show with fellow Guild member Rhian Price and other members of the magazine’s livestock desk.
Since its launch in 2013, Agri-hub has been sourcing articles for editors from its database of agricultural companies, explains Olivia Cooper.
“But the team of experienced freelance journalists and PR consultants – all Members of the Guild – have been inundated with their own editorial and PR work,” she adds. “It gets to a point where you either have to grow or start turning work down, so I’m going to enjoy working with Melanie and driving the business forward.”
When not writing about farming topics, Melanie says she enjoys working on her aunt and uncle’s farm in Monmouthshire, as well as reading, watching films, walking, figure skating and tackling Sudoku puzzles.
