Placements needed for Guild training course

Calling all editors – can you support the Guild’s annual John Deere Journalism Training Award by offering three days’ work experience to one of the course members this summer?

If so, organiser Steve Mitchell of ASM Public Relations would like to hear from you: “We have an established and very supportive group of work experience hosts, but I’m keen to expand the number of placements we can offer,” he says.

Once the course members complete their classroom training, which covers the basics of news and feature writing, interviewing techniques and social media, they have to complete three days of work experience with a magazine, newspaper or occasionally at a PR agency, on dates to be agreed with the host. This can take place at any time between the end of the course in mid-July, and mid-September, when students have to submit an article for the final award.

“We just ask that they be kept as busy as possible, while getting an insight into how their host publication, web-based publisher or agency operates, and that they have a chance to get some work into print or online should their copy be good enough,” says Steve. “Any new offers of help for this year’s course, which takes place from July 15 to 17, will be very gratefully received!”
