Farmers Weekly arable editor Richard Allison has won the 2026 Omnia Digital Farming Award sponsored by Hutchinsons.

Richard put together an excellent feature on how technology can help farmers make better use of inputs.

Judges that included Northumberland farmer Thomas Todd and Omnia Digital Services manager Nick Strelczuk said it was a well written, practical example of how new technology is being implemented on farm to improve everyday decision-making, including clearly highlighting the benefits it can bring.

“The article featured balanced viewpoints from both agronomists and farmer, written in a way farmers can relate to, supported with good technical detail and costings.”

As an added bonus, the judges said it was also well laid out, combining effective use of imagery, tables, text and other illustrations.

Freelance journalist Jane Carley was the runner up. Her article about a contractor setting up a drone application business was published in Profi Magazine.

The article showed the potential application of drone technology on UK farms, combining good detail about the equipment and its uses, plus the challenges that the company offering the services has had to overcome, the judges commented.

“It was certainly likely to get readers thinking about where certain farming operations could be heading in the near future,” they agreed.

Richard took home £1000, while Jane received £500.

Both winners were presented their prizes at the Guild’s annual Harvest Lunch celebration.
