The latest cohort of aspiring journalists have completed the 2026 BGAJ John Deere Training Course in Nottingham, held earlier this month, with 11 attendees developing their skills to help take the next steps in their careers.
The three-day course was led by professional journalism tutor and journalist David Mascord and was held at John Deere’s head office in Langar.
Focusing on learning the basics of good journalism, the course also featured more in-depth discussions on how to enhance their writing to suit the world of agriculture and how to apply those skills in the real world.
Janine Adamson, Editor of CPM Magazine, was invited to the course as a guest speaker, where she shared her knowledge and experience of working in agricultural journalism.
A major aspect of this year’s course was the participation in a John Deere press conference led by Chris Wiltshire, John Deere tactical marketing manager, which focused on the 8R 410 tractor.
As well as the press conference, participants were involved in practical writing exercises including a written assignment involving producing a news story, plus theory sessions on the basics of journalism along with group work.
Attendees also had the opportunity to take part in a ride and drive experience at Langar, with the chance to drive the 9RX 830, the world’s biggest production tractor.
“The BGAJ John Deere training course has been completed by many of the top agricultural journalists in the sector and John Deere and proud to continue playing its part in shaping the careers of these aspiring journalists,” says Chris Wiltshire.
The three-day course also gave the participants the opportunity to get to know each other both professional and personally, and network with other like-minded people.
Participants will now complete work experience in the sector and compete for the 2026 John Deere Training Award, which requires participants to submit a 500-word written news story for a chance to win £250 and entry to the BGAJ Annual Harvest Lunch in London later this year.
Applications for the 2027 training course will open later this year.
